Report from Rob and Matt Steele
On Our arrival at the Hook of Holland the group disembarked the ferry and made our way through customs.
We regrouped at a carpark just over the road from the Port where we were meeting our fellow club member from the Netherlands Michiel & Bert with his beautiful Crayford Mk111 .Once we had all arrived we set off for our first stop of the day the Louwman Museum, around a 40 minute drive.
We soon found it was really difficult to keep in a large Convoy of cars as we would continually get separated by traffic lights, roundabouts and pedestrian crossings so we tried to keep in smaller groups of 3 or four cars at a time. We were doing really well with directions until we missed a turn and found ourselves entering a motorway and heading in the wrong direction, taking us out of our way for around 10 minutes. Once we had turned around and got back on route we soon arrived at the Louwman Museum, in beautiful sunshine and parked up. All the Cortinas looked really Stunning lined up in two rows in front of the museum & attracted quite some interest from visitors to the museum.
We spent the next few hours looking around the museum which was packed with almost everything car related you could think of including 1950s and 60s Formula 1 cars, Le Mans race cars, and even some early electric vehicles to name but a few.
Just inside the front entrance was a display of F1 cars that included Jim Clark’s Lotus 49 that made its debut just up the road from the Louwman Museum at Zandvoort in 1967.
We had lunch in a magnificent street setting inside the museum before completing our visit.
We set off around 2.30 for our second stop of the day, the Kinderdijk windmills, a UNESCO world heritage site.
The route to the windmills wasn’t meant to have included a short ferry ride but somehow many of the group arrived there at the same time and all got on the same crossing!
We arrived at 3.45 we parked up beside the Canal and took a leisurely stroll along the pathway running alongside the Canal to view some of the many windmills built along the 2km stretch of the Het Nieuwe Waterschap canal.
Leaving Kinderdijk behind we set off for Nijmegen the final destination for our overnight stay arriving around 8pm.
What a fantastic day and we have only just started!
